Hand Lettering Specimens

Scope
As the course title of "Moving Letters" suggests, hand-lettering sessions were inspired by movement, including various dances, onomatopoeic adjectives, and movement of the letters themselves.
Approach
I often found inspiration using unconventional pen nibs such as bottle caps, wood blocks, and twigs. I worked alongside the unpredictability of these media, allowing the crisp objectivity of black ink to embody unexpected quirks.

Environmental Typography

Scope
Use physical objects to model environmental typography and photograph the results.
Approach
The first set of letters focuses on negative space, using lack of light and the absence of letters to represent their meaning. The second approach uses perspective to emphasize the spatial aspect of the environmental typography.

Self-Directed Zine

Scope
An open-ended project encouraging students to incorporate their own handcrafted typefaces.
Approach
I integrated handcrafted ink calligraphy with digital media (Adobe Illustrator). I used various tools to apply ink to paper, scanning the results and editing textures and blending modes digitally. Each spread demonstrates a practical step toward mindfulness, and the accompanying typography personifies the nature of the step as it feels in the body.
