Self Portrait: "Anatomy of Pearl"
Challenge
Open-ended self-portrait allowing any medium, as long as it has digital illustration and is digitally created (no photo collage). The design of the portrait should communicate different meanings, ideas, or emotions.
Approach
As a burgeoning graphic designer, I used the medium of an infographic (11x17") to share my story. The satirical writing compounds with the illustration to convey a cohesive personality.
Tools
ibis Paint X, Adobe Illustrator
Digital Collage
Challenge
Create a visual composition and narrative through a photocollage in Photoshop with a specific story or theme behind it. Use print overlayed with projected light to create a visual spatial experience.
Approach
My piece explores themes of consumerism, AI, and industrialization. I prompted Ohio University's supercomputer to generate distorted imagery of natural landscapes, romantic love, sunshine, health, sex, and spirituality. In my diegesis, these joys exist exclusively in advertisements, suggesting that the means to their ends can only be through transaction or vicarious experience. (5100x3300 px)
Tools
Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Ohio University Supercomputer
Digital render of the projection. Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro
The final projection piece in physical space.
Interactive Projection: "We Are Little Creatures"
Challenge
Synthesize the experiences learned from the semester through an artwork in any medium that uses a digital art technique or influence. Students must write a 1,000-word proposal that explains the commentary provided by the piece.
Approach
To create a conceptual and interactive piece, I coded an HTML page with ever-morphing Rorschach forms that transform into random animals when clicked. This visualization contemplates the recycling of organic matter that has taken place since the beginning of life on earth.
Laser-Cut Vector Composition
Challenge
Create a composition of a natural or urban landscape with a Photoshop collage, transferring this to Illustrator to vectorize the file and prepare it for laser cutting. Assemble the lasercut pieces for a physical installation (17x11").
Approach
I use environmental storytelling to suggest the existence of a fallen civilization obscured in a futuristic landscape, with the virus in the foreground hinting to its end. I drew inspiration from 70s sci-fi landscape artwork through colors and form, taking advantage of the physical medium by designing a complex foreground.
Tools
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, lasercutter, acrylic paint, colored pencils
